Bug Description
Current system Ubuntu 9.10 (with packages for kubuntu installed so I can use kde)
started update with alt+f2 update-manager -d
while updating I had firefox, skype and update-manager running
bug occured during package installation step of ubuntu 10.06 beta 1
when I turned on the computer it started from hibernation (the second start of machine from hibernation)
message in popup window: could not install 'libc6': subprocess installed post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)
terminal output(the part that I could see to type it here...):
ceived a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., ( <-this part was repeated several times)
E:Problem executing scripts DPkg::Post-Invoke 'if [ -d /var/lib/
File "/usr/lib/
IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor
Text from pop up window that opened when I closed the first pop up window:
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/
E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1), E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault., E:Sub
(the last line repeated itself to the bottom of my window and even further...)
Now the other somehow related bugs of installer that popped up when the above bug occured:
1. I had to type the text from terminal output of distribution upgrade because the window was not responsive when error pop up window opened. It would be nice if the pop up window would have copy terminal output to clipboard button...
2. when the text in the second pop up window (with this text: Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade is now aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a). ) opened I couldn't get to OK/cancel button and couldn't paste the whole bug report here because the screen's dimensions prohibited me from doing that...
3. at the time when the bug occured I wasn't able to open new programs (not even make a print screen) so luckily I had firefox opened to submit this error report. It would be nice if I could submit the bug report from update manager for such cases.
Hopefully this error report helps somewhat...
regards,
Domen
affects: | ubuntu → update-manager (Ubuntu) |
I forgot to mention that my PC is intel core 2 duo running 32 bit ubuntu.
The other problem that the bug described above causes is that ubuntu doesn't revert to pre update state after the bug occures (I think that i pressed OK in the second pop up window but I can't be shore as I couldn't see the button and simply selected the window and pressed enter)
After you close the update manager the system still doesn't respond -> you can open menus on gnome panel but if you click restart or try to open some app then nothing happens so it's also not possible to gather more info regarding the bug/system.
If you do a hard reset with the button on your machine, ubuntu doesn't start again and if you run it in restore mode in prints out kernel panic...
