Steve,
Sorry to hear you are having an issue with Ubuntu One. Are you able to open the Preferences panel by right-clicking the Ubuntu One applet in the top panel and select Preferences. Set the 'Connect on Start' to 'Never'. Usually after it crashes you can start it and it will work normally. Is that the case with you? If so you can keep it set to not start on connect, then open Ubuntu One manually (Applications > Accessories > Ubuntu One) when you want to sync. This issue has been resolved in Lucid and the Beta/PPA with the replacement of the Applet with the Ubuntu One Preferences.

thank you,

The issue has only happened once, it works OK (apart from bug #498444) the rest of the time. If it has been fixed for future versions, then fair enough!

Steve,
Crashing when clicking on the applet is another symptom of bug 498444. In light of that I am going to mark this bug a duplicate of bug 498444. Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Thank you for submitting this report and continue to report any bugs you may find in the future.
thank you,
