Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have three files open: a Word 2007 *.doc, an OO-created *.odt, and an OO-created *.rtf.

I can save the *.doc and the *.odt without drama, but whenever I save the *.rtf, OO crashes and brings up the crash dialogue.

If I save the *.rtf as a *.odt, I can save it without drama, including when covering to *.odt.

Thank you for your bug report, If the document that is causing this error has no personal information could you please upload it? If it does have personal information edit it out, confirm that the bug still happens with this edited file and then upload it. Thanks.

Attached. I stress that this is not the only document which caused the crash, but the other one I needed to keep working on and so converted to .odt.

It was created, from scratch, from OpenOffice as a blank file, initially saved as *.odt, then converted to *.rtf when I remembered what other computers I would need to use to edit it.

hmm, it is working for me. I am running 64bit though so perhaps this is arch specific. Marking as new so hopefully someone else will pick up this bug.

This file also saves fine for me (I am also 64 bit, can we get a 32 bit tester as well). Could you attach a odt version of the same file?
Perhaps also clearing your openoffice settings might help: Open a terminal and try rm .openoffice.org/ -rf
Is there anything else custom about your setup (filesystem, computer with other issues). Also, please try with a liveCD/USB on the same machine.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I can confirm this bug as still occuring. Ubuntu 10.04 OpenOffice Writer 3.2 (Oracle splash screen) crashes when saving a WindowsXP.doc in rtf. When I start up OO Writer, it does recover the file only to crash on the next save. OO 3.2 on Fedora 13 does not crash when performing the same operation. I have duplicated this crash on three different computers running 10.04 32 bits with all available current updates.

I have reproduced this bug. The file I used was a large 97/2000/XP .doc file containing lots of formating and a few images. When I saved it as RTF I got the error message 'Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice.org crashed...'. When I re-opened the .doc file, I was asked to recover it,

OOo version: ooo-build 3.2.0.10, Debian 1:3.2.0-7ubuntu4.1
Ubuntu version: 10.04

Problem could not be reproduced with

OOo version: ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu Package 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu1
Ubuntu version: 10.10 beta running in Oracle VM Virtualbox.

Using the rtf doc in comment #3 I cannot reproduce with:
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu1~10.04.1
(the current (U)OOo for lucid 10.04)

I then tested (using the same OOo) the attached OOo installation guide and still could not get (U)OOo to crash. Attached: 1) original OOo installation guide odt, the guide saved as a doc, and the guide saved as an rtf.

Version I used in comment #8 was 1:3.2.0-7ubuntu4.1 File size was not a factor and nor was processor as I tried this on three different computers running a fully updated from current repositories including a Netbook with an Atom processor. The problem may be fixed in 10.10 but that does not fix 10.04 LTS which will be used by many for sometime to come. Hopefully, the stable release for 10.04 is updated and the problem resolved.

Psycona, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. I am unable to reproduce this issue in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/556169/+attachment/1574464/+files/Installation_Guide_OOo3.rtf && lowriter -nologo Installation_Guide_OOo3.rtf

File -> Save As -> Save button -> Yes button -> Keep Format button notice LO does not crash.

Does this work for you?
