Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I upgraded this machine to Lucid and am using an older Nvidia card with the Nouveau driver. The machine boots and the GDM screen comes up great, but when I press enter on my user name, the password box comes up, but GDM is then frozen and X restarts a few seconds after I try to type anything.

From your logs it seems like you're using the proprietary nvidia driver - both for this boot, and for a previous X session which crashed. Are you sure that you're using the open-source nouveau drivers?

Changed in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu):

Thanks for pointing that out... I guess I got confused about what driver was actually getting used and forgot to verify.
I tried removing the proprietary drivers and will test that later. For now I changed the bug's package.

affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers-96 (Ubuntu)

This bug affects me too. I'm using Lucid Beta with all last updates on an Nvidia GeForce 4 MX420-card using the proprietary "nvidia-96" driver. After selecting a user, GDM hangs for a few seconds, then restarts with the user-selection menu. Of course the same problem occurs.

It is a problem in the combination of GDM and the "nvidia-96" driver. When I do not specify a driver in xorg.conf I can perfectly login. But with those drivers there's no 3D-accelleration...
