Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

I just tried Lucid beta.

The problem I have is that boot hangs. I'm left with the new ubuntu splash screen (ubuntu logo on purple background) without any progress.

I made it boot by adding the nomodeset kernel boot parameter. My graphic card is an nvidia, which worked correctly with nouveau (I tried about one year ago).

Should you need any further information, just ask!

Some more information.

During the hang, no key combination has any effect. No console can be accessed through the usual Ctrl Alt F keys.

However, the system is not locked up. If I press the power button, it shuts down nicely.

For a couple of seconds I can see a console with some messages.

Please attach logs from when you booted with KMS enabled; these logs simply show the case where KMS is turned off which doesn't tell us much. :-)

Hi

I have a problem similar to that. The diference is: I'm using a laptop SempToshiba, Kubuntu version, upgraded from Karmic and there is no bootsplash on startup. The symptons are the same. But when I reboot with the kernel of 9.10 version the system works nicely.

I waited the update of kernel (to 2.6.32-19-generic) and xorg, but the problem persists.

I forgot to say the problem also happens when I boot in the rescue mode.

@Bryce

Hi Bryce,

What logs do you need?

I have to collect it manually, since when I boot with KMS the system hangs - so I cannot use ubuntu-bug.

@Alessandro: Your problem is different, as you have totally different hardware, don't have KMS, and don't see a bootsplash. Please file a new bug.

@f3a97: The logs that we most need are dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log (if it gets that far). You might be able to get to X by hitting Alt+SysRq+K to kill the bootsplash, in which case you can use “apport-collect 554071”

Oh, dear. It looks like you've got two monitors plugged in there, which is quite likely to be triggering bug #533135 in Plymouth. Before I mark this bug as a duplicate, can you confirm that trying to boot with just a single monitor succeeds?

Chris,

You're great!

Actually I had a second monitor attached, due to some problems to the laptop primary screen.

However, the boot completed correctly once I unplugged it!

We can definitely close this bug,

Thanks again :)
