Bug Description

Hello everybody,

I tried to open and read a CD (pdf files inside) with Dolphin in Mint KDE 8, but nothing appeared in the screen. Instead, when clicking on "UDF Volume" in Dolphin screen, the following message could be read: "... no new line at the end of etc/fstab; mount: block device /dev/sr0 protected against writing; mounted as read-only; mount:wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program or other... try syslog..."

Then, I tested the CD with Mint KDE7 (I have dual boot) and it worked fine. However, there are no differences for dev/sr0 in fstab between Mint 8 KDE and Mint 7 KDE ("/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0") and I have no problem with other CD formats.

Here is what KSystemLog told me in Mint KDE 8:

It's likely to be due to the difference in kernels. Check this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/530060

Try the given solution, add the following to /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_EXTRA="libata.dma=1"

And see if it behaves any better.

Thank you, Clement.
I've tried that (new line added and grub updated), but the issue remains the same.
Additional information: I could read the same CD (UDF formatted) into another computer with Kubuntu Karmic without any problem (Kubuntu Karmic completely updated, so different kernel to Mint KDE 8, in line with your suggested explanation).
Any other suggestion? Thanks again.

If it's not too much to ask, can you try to read it with Karmic on the same computer? If the problem can be reproduced we can move this bug upstream.

As it is now, I'm not sure what could be the cause for it since we don't patch the kernel in Linux Mint... as far as hardware support goes we use the same technology as Ubuntu.

I've installed Karmic in my laptop (Toshiba Satellite A100-755): same error in a fresh install of Kubuntu Karmic (original kernel, no updates installed and only pre-packaged software) as in Helena KDE. Later I will update the system completely and I will tell you what happens.
Thank you. So long.

Same error after updating Kubuntu Karmic from kernel 2.6.31.14 to the latest (2.6.31.20) in my laptop. So I guess some problem with hardware configuration of laptop, since in desktop PC with Karmic no problem, as I told you before.
Please let me know if you need additional information about the bug.

Thanks. I'll mark the bug as upstream so. I get the same issue here on one of the laptops too. It looks like a kernel issue to me and my intuition is that a boot parameter will fix it.

Hi mf-linux,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 552754

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! I have tried live versions (final release) of Ubuntu and Kubuntu Lucid (10.04 LTS): Ubuntu Lucid worked perfectly with UDF volume; in contrast, Kubuntu Lucid give the same error as Kubuntu Karmic and Mint Helena KDE. Since both distributions of Lucid (Gnome and KDE) have the same kernel (2.6.32-21-generic), I think the problem is related with the desktop manager (and some particular hardware: as I told previously, the problem was only with my laptop, not my desktop computer).
Thank you for your attention. Please let me know if you need additional information.
