Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Im in lucid Beta 1. I manage to get to the Desktop without problems. I can explore the menus from the panel and unfold the calendar, but when I try to open the first window, ANY window, I get a big white box and clicking doesnt work anymore, even though I can move the mouse for a while. I can also go back to the tty, even thought I keep getting messages of error every 2 seconds which makes it quite annoying...

What are the error messages you see every 2 seconds? Can you paste them in?

You mention a big white box, can you attach a photograph of the screen as an example (just in case there is some additional clues).

Also try turning off Desktop Effects and see if that affects the issue - white windows suggest a rendering issue.

I cant take an snapshot since the system becomes unusable. Imagine any kind of window in the desktop. The now replace it for a white square (plain like that) of the same size. That's what appears.

And of course, Compiz is OFF.

Alright, well from the information gathered so far, this seems to match with bug 509273 so I'm marking it a dupe.

To test this, try booting with the 'pci=nomsi' kernel option. In theory that should make the issue go away. If not, undupe this bug report and we'll investigate further.
