Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:
1. Press the battery status hotkey (fn+f3 on this laptop)
2. Click the 'x' to close the battery status popup
3. Press the battery status hotkey again

Expected result:
The battery status popup displays again

Actual result:
Nothing happens. Restarting acpid, logging out of gnome and back in again, restarting gdm etc makes no difference. Only rebooting appears to make it work again, once.

Software:
Dapper + updates to 2006-08-04
Kernel 2.6.15-26-386

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 9300

After pressing the battery status hotkey, i get:

$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
platform_i8042_i8042_Kbd_Port_logicaldev_input condition ButtonPressed = battery

I can do it only once, after that i have to reboot.

I've tested this again with edgy final, and i get the exact same behaviour. Following from juan's mention of 'lshal -m' above, i've done some testing:

1. Boot edgy, run 'lshal -m', press fn+f3:
    keypress event is visible
2. Press fn+f3 again:
    keypress event does not occur
3. Suspend edgy, unsuspend edgy, press fn+f3 again:
    keypress event does not occur
4. Hibernate edgy, unhibernate edgy, press fn+f3 again:
    keypress event does not occur
5. Reboot edgy, press fn+f3:
    keypress event is visible

So, it seems pretty clear that it is not a hardware issue, otherwise hibernate/unhibernate should have cleared it. I'm changing the affected package to the kernel for now, as i'm not sure where exactly it should be against.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached its end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
