Bug Description

Binary package hint: ureadahead

I upgraded to 10.04 beta from 9.10 as soon as i could using "update-manager -d". the install went fine, rebooted remarkably fast, and ran beautifully. I restarted my system after applying updates, loaded into plymouth, at which point the boot hung with all the little lights on under the plymouth emblem red and not cycling. my hdd access light was on, so i figured i'd restart once the light went out. 20 mins later, the system actually loaded. I didn't like the 20 boot time, and figured it may have been an error in the update, so i downloaded the live cd. again, loaded beautifully, installed fine, restarted quickly, installed updates, rebooted again and again the system hung at plymouth. the drive seems to make a *CLICK,click* sound. I was not having any luck finding anybody else on the forums with these same or similar symptoms, so i assumed maybe it was the cd, so i downloaded the alt install cd with the same exact effect. I have tried loading grub2 without the "quiet" and "splash" options, with the same basic results (hang after text boot, no splash). Funny thing is, no matter how long the boot actually takes, the bootchart shows under 400 secs.

Ubuntu lucid (development branch) 10.04 beta1
ureadahead ver. 0.100.0-4.1
kernel 2.6.32-18.27

here are links to the boot charts from the ureadahead test suggested by keybuk in the "all about ureadahead" sticky;

Hi there, thanks for the report and your patience!

Unfortunately the image links you've supplied don't work - they just direct me to the "imageshack.us" front page. Could you attach the original files directly to this bug (it allows you to upload)

Changed in ureadahead (Ubuntu):

importance: Undecided → Medium

Note that your ureadahead dump looks normal, no alarming issues here:

/var/lib/ureadahead/pack: created Tue, 30 Mar 2010 06:58:30 +0000 for hdd 8:1
13 inode groups, 953 files, 1044 blocks (88432 kB)

Could you also attach the output of running "mount" for me? Thanks!

I apologize about that, I wiped my drive and reinstalled since then with much the same effect, but i reduced the boot time to 5 minutes by commenting out "recordfail" in the 00_HEADER of grub.cfg. i will also reprofile ureadahead and attach the 3 logs from that. here is a link to the output of "mount": http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AeqU_ryw50fpZDNiYmJtNl8yY3dzejRoZHo&hl=en
and i'll be back in about 20 minutes...

That's very very very very very very odd.

I agree, very (x6) odd indeed! however, i was unsure as to it being related to ureadahead (filed a bug for it as a suggestion from someone) and am now fairly sure that ureadahead isn't the problem. the first boot with ureadahead disabled took about 20 minutes again and the same with the reprofiling boot for ureadahead, but the standard ureadahead boot was back down to about 5 minutes :)

anyway, here's the bootchart for the first boot after disabling ureadahead

edit: i'm not able to duplicate the 5 minute boot after the ureadahead reprofiling. in fact, my last boot was 25 minutes

Your system is continuously in I/O wait, I actually strongly suspect you have a hardware problem here. Could you check all of the cables in the computer are seated correctly, perhaps clean out dust, etc. as a sensible debugging check

On the off-chance it's a driver problem, I've reassigned the task to the kernel - please run "apport-collect 551879" to collect the information they will need

I will check all of this when I get home, but as both I and benderbeerman are having the exact same issue, I somehow doubt it's down to hardware failure. Particularly as there was no similar issue in 9.10, nor if I boot to a root console in 10.04b, or in Windows.

i don't believe it's a hardware issue either, as i was also running other releases of ubuntu prior to the beta. i have also cleaned out my box, blown out dust, unplugged/replugged in cables.

Eric Honaker (songwind-gmail) wrote :

I also cleaned out and checked cables. Remembering an issue I had back in 8.10, I also disconnected my drive-bay USB card reader/hub/external SATA, and my more standard powered USB hub.

This made no difference. I tried to run appport as well, but it wouldn't let me update.

After getting this notification, I updated the kernel as well, but it didn't help.

I ran the rest of the available upgrades, however, and the issue went away.
