Can't turn keyboard backlight off

Bug Description

I just upgraded my June 2009 MacBook Pro from Karmic to Lucid.

The keyboard backlight control now finally works (as it used to for a while when I first installed... Jaunty I guess—maybe it's the choice of drivers). But I can't turn it off. What I can do is dim the keyboard's internal lighting until it's almost completely gone. If I press the dim button once more after that, it goes back to full-on again.

I would guess that the driver may be confusing "manually disabled" with "automatically disabled because the keyboard isn't being used."

Hello
Is this problem present with the latest updated Lucid's or Maverick's packages?
Thanks in advance

It's hard to tell. At the moment, in Maverick, I can't seem to turn the backlight on any more!

The keypresses for this are clearly recognized, since they affect my mouse pointer (it goes from the text cursor for this input field to the regular arrow pointer and back again) but nothing else happens.

It works again in the sense that I seem to be back to the original problem: I can dim the keyboard lights but I can't quite turn it off (except by waiting for it to turn off of its own accord). When I try to dim further, it just goes back on full again.

Am running the apport-collect now.

Hi Jeroen,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 551436

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is on a regularly updated Maverick. I had some trouble booting maverick kernels before, but am now booted into a very recent one. At the moment, I can't turn the keyboard backlight on. Again, the system clearly reacts to the keypresses when I hit the keys that control it, in that the mouse pointer temporarily goes from "text cursor" to "arrow" if it happened to be hovering over text at the time, but no notification bubble appears and the light does not come on.

I'll run apport-collect again.
