Bug Description

Binary package hint: klibido

for example, on a download with a (verified) 10 mbit speed cap, klibido will report download speeds to vary (even when the actual speed is stable/constant) anywhere between 1700 and 10000+ KB/s, while averaging about 2000-2500 KB/s.

Speed looks like normal here on edgy with latest klibido package.
Feedback when you migrate to edgy would be nice :)

Well, here you go :/

This time, the download is capped at 8 mbit by both servers, resulting in a total speed of max. 2000KB/s. Klibido's indication is still way off, and still varying greatly even when the real speed (lower left of the screenshot) is stable.

Fresh Kubuntu edgy (release) install, klibido 0.2.5-2ubuntu2, newly configured settings.

Still exists in a fresh install of feisty. If anything changed it's for the worse: typically, speed indication is now about 4x too high and still varies significantly even when the actual download speed is stable.

I just gave this a shot and ran a snoop on my router port for my machine, and the speeds looked correct. I am trying to figure this out, and I have the klibido.cpp file torn apart looking at it, and the code looks the same as other apps that monitor up/down speed. I would recommend not using Conky or SuperKaramba for true network speeds if possible. There are times when I have noticed it to be way off. I would love to get to the bottom of this and figure it out. Tonio, if you want to give klibido.cpp a once over and see if anything sticks out, please do. Right now I am going to probably request a sync from Debian for the time being on Hardy as they have implemented our patches.

Thanks for your efforts in trying to solve this bug :)

Just updated to kubuntu gutsy tonight, and with a freshly (re)configured klibido found the problem to still exist in 0.2.5-3ubuntu5. The speeds measured by various monitoring applications are accurate. I'm attaching a ogg/theora video of a 716 MBytes download with an average speed of around 1875 kBytes/s, consistent with the per server speed limit of 8 mbit/s. The monitoring application visible in the video is knemo; largest error happens around 04:40 when klibido indicates a total speed of some 500 mbit/s.

Confirming this so it doesn't expire and plus your video says it all I guess. I have gone ahead and filed a report upstream and linked it to this report so we can track the progress. Thank you.

Is this still an issue with hardy/intrepid? seems to me the download-rates are reported accurately.

Still happens on hardy, see attached screenshots of a download capped at 20 Mbps. Dunno about intrepid as I don't use that yet.

This simple bug was reported in 2006, and it's still not fixed. Unbelievable.
