Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ1 with an Intel Core i7, Intel Arrandale GMA HD and nVidia GT330M graphics. I have tried both the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Beta 1 and the latest daily build (3/28, AMD64). When booting with the nVidia card selected, I get a black screen and a crash. When booting with the Intel card, I get a visible screen, however it is severely corrupted and unusable (Please see attached image). In Ubuntu 9.10, trying to use the Intel card results in a black screen with a few yellow vertical wavy lines and a hard crash.

If I boot with the "nomodeset" option, the computer will boot properly but X refuses to load the Intel driver due to lack of KMS. The VESA driver functions properly albeit at low resolution.

Please let me know if any additional information would be helpful.

Thank you for spotting the upstream bug report, I was going to ask you to test with the xorg-edgers PPA since that has a newer driver and the issue could have been fixed there, but since the upstram report is with current git, that shouldn't be necessary. You may give kernel 2.6.34-rc1 or drm-intel-next from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D a try, but I doubt it will work. But if it does, it will be valuable information for upstream. Information about the mainline kernels is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds .

I have tried to boot with the latest packages from xorg-edgers (xorg 7.4+3, xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.10.903+git20100325) on the drm-intel-next AMD64 2.6.34 (3/20) Kernel, and all I get is a blank screened crash before the splash. I can boot as before with nomodeset and use the VESA drivers.

I solved the blank screen crash issue by using grub1 instead of grub2, but there is still a problem with intel drivers, colors are wrong (unusable) : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27220

Half this report is about a hard crash with the nVidia card, which is not mentioned at all in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27220
Therefore, I wonder if upstream is working on resolving only the other less serious issue of video corruption.

Could you please file a new bug - with “ubuntu-bug xorg” on the boot after you've experienced a crash - for your hard-crash, as you're clearly experiencing two bugs.

It would be useful if you could attach /var/log/messages to the new bug, as this will hopefully contain the kernel log for the failed boot. As /var/log/messages can sometimes contain sensitive information, you should mark the bug as “private” before attaching /var/log/messages.
