Bug Description

Since 8.10 or so I'm upgrading always to the Beta1 of the next Version when its out.
Until now I never had a Problem. This time was different. For what reason ever I reinstalled with i386, worked fine but after I decided to reinstall again with amd64. So I've done. The installation worked fine, but after it hanged by the splashscreen.
/var/log/messages said the last done thing was to initialize USB... so I switched off USB. No Change. I booted without quiet and splash in the hope to get more Informations. This time the boot worked, but the resolution was not automatically detected. Made dist-upgrade, no change. Installing the GeForce driver solved the problem. Ubuntu is booting now also with splash fine.

Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "linux" line and at the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet".
5. Type "ctrl + x" to boot the custom boot line.

Hi,

With "I booted without quiet and splash in the hope to get more
Informations. This time the boot worked, but the resolution was not
automatically detected." I meant exactly that :D

The result was that everything except the resolution detection worked
fine. After recognizing that I remebered that I read that there is
something new with the kernel and the graphic and thought maybe it's
solved when I install the proprietary nvidia driver. So it was.

Ubuntu 10.04 will not use usplash anymore. Ubuntu has transitioned to using plymouth, which works better with kernel-mode-setting drivers.

@GhostOfTheNet:

I'm assuming you are using an external monitor with the Lucid nouveau drivers for graphics. There is a known issue, bug 533135, that seems to occur when there's an external monitor. I'm marking this as a duplicate. If any of this seems incorrect, feel free to reset the state of this bug back to "New".
