Desktop/work spaces inconsistent (in Nautilus)

The folder names differ. Both are visible even in the same window (see screenshot).

I propose to use "desktop" consistently; other systems use that as well, and users should get along with that best.

Die Übersetzung des Ordners ist unterschiedlich. Beide sind sogar im gleichen Fenster parallel sichtbar (siehe Screenshots).
Ich würde "Desktop" vorschlagen als durchgängigen Begriff, andere Systeme nutzen das so auch und die Nutzer kommen damit wohl am besten zurecht.

Der Bug tritt unter Karmic (Screenshots) und der aktuellen Lucid-Beta gleichermaßen auf.

Together with the GNOME team we've decided to no longer use the expression "desktop" and replace it with a real translation. The only problem remaining is that we don't know whether renaming the "desktop" folder (xdg-user-dirs) might break stuff, so we haven't done that yet.

I had to do the same some time ago (perhaps before Hardy... or around that time :)) for Hungarian. IIRC, this affected only the new installations, and the upgraded ones were unmodified (this is easy to test, however, just replace the .mo file). Altough in theory this could break some custom user scripts, I did't get any negative feedback, neither did I saw users complainig on online forums (despite the fact that some Hungarian users think that Ubuntu is getting worse and worse with every release - if a change like this would have serious consequences, I'm sure I'd have heard about it :)).

So, I think it is safe to go ahead.

I personally don't feel good with translating it (for German users), but okay.
At least we should prevent a Vista style "solution" where the displayed names differ from what actually is on your hard disk. As we use our terminals, that would cause even more confusion than in Windows ;-).

So I am actually in favour of any change that makes this thing named consistent.

p.s. The folders Documents, Pictures and so on are translated as well, so we can probably risk renaming the Desktop as well ;-)

Apple's OS X also translates in the GUI.

Fun bugs result when you have two folders named "Programme" and don't know which the OS actually uses. :-/

Personally i really like the way Win and Mac handle this today, with different filenames on the disk and in the GUI. So they have fixed directories like "Users" which are the same for every machine, but the users see their translated directory ("Benutzer"). Of course this can be confusing when using the terminal or the address field in the file manager but I think if it would have been this way since years we may got used to it ... or different directories could lead to the same places, like "Benutzer/John/Bilder" could be interpreted as "/home/users/John/Images" ... just a suggestion...

We should either take »Arbeitsfläche« or keep »Desktop«. Introducing a third term is even more confusing than keeping »Desktop«. Besides this, I think »Ablage« has a completely different meaning than »Arbeitsfläche«. I personally associate »Ablage« with something where I put my documents which I _don't_ currently need or work on. That would be the complete opposite of »Arbeitsfläche« or »desktop«.

Well, that's exactly how I use it, but I seem to be the only one ;) So »Arbeitsfläche« is probably the best solution.
I'm just wondering whether the Umlaut could cause problems …

This problem still exists in Lucid. Correct translation should be »Arbeitsfläche«.

The problem still exists in Ubuntu 12.04.
The folder is now named "Arbeitsfläche" and the entry in the sidebar in Nautilus is also "Arbeitsfläche".
The problem only exists in the file-open and file-save-dialogs (see screenshot). There the shortcut in the sidebar is still "Desktop"
