--------- IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR XINETD USERS ----------
The following line will be added to your /etc/inetd.conf file:

9999\t\tstream\ttcp\tnowait\tapprox\t/usr/sbin/approx

If you are indeed using xinetd, you will have to convert the
above into /etc/xinetd.conf format, and add it manually. See
/usr/share/doc/xinetd/README.Debian for more information.
Suggested entry (automatically converted using itox):

service 9999ttstreamttcptnowaittapproxt
{
 type = RPC
 rpc_version = usr/sbin/approx
Line 1: socket type missing

The itox command is wrong. This one will work:

echo -e "9999\t\tstream\ttcp\tnowait\tapprox\t/usr/sbin/approx\t/usr/sbin/approx" | itox

OK, I gave up. I installed apt-cacher-ng. This package should be deleted.

Hi cmcginty, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report, and I'm sorry that you didn't receive a timely reply.

On 10.04, the closest version to the one you were reporting this on, this message is printed instead now:

Setting up approx (4.1-1build1) ...
Note: xinetd currently is not fully supported by update-inetd.
      Please consult /usr/share/doc/xinetd/README.Debian and itox(8).

I believe this was actually an issue in update-inetd, not approx.

Since this as only an issue in prior versions (looks like Ubuntu 9.10), which are all EOL now, I am closing this as Invalid.

Changed in approx (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
