Bug Description

This is a feature request to add hyphenation support to software-center. This is required to correctly split category names over multiple lines when the length of one word is greater than the width available.

See attached screenshot for the current handling of this case.

Hi Sense. Thanks for that bug report. This can be solved in two ways, either software-center can display the word over two lines, or the translation can be updated. Although on first thoughts it is not unreasonable to assume that software-center should split the word over two lines, this is quite complex. Software-center needs to know at which position to break the word, ie it must support hyphenation in all available languages. I presume there are existing libraries for this, but it would pull in a lot of dependencies, which would probably not be worth while. There is a chance that someone may implement this once upon a day, but this would not be in the scope for lucid. The other option is to change the translation string to a slightly less strict translation. One could for instance just choose to use the word 'ontwikkeling'. Although this is just a straight translation of 'development' rather than 'development tools' I feel that it being shorter means that it is easier to scan. Also although the word may contain some ambiguity, it is the translation that is used in all generalness for this sort of thing. There may of course be a better word, but I couldn't just come up with one. If you want this fixed for lucid, it should be fixed in the translations. I think in general we should be able to assume that a translation team will come up with a concise word, but there may be languages which do really require truncation support in software-center. For this reason I will leave this one open. Other people may of course have other opinions..

That last 'truncation' should read 'hyphenation'.

Hi Sense,

Can you test with the latest version of software-center? This may have been fixed by a move from webkit to a gtk-based view.

bzr branch lp:software-center && cd software-center && ./software-center
