Thanks for your report.

If it fails during an upgrade to lucid, could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? If it was during an upgrade of the driver then attach the file /var/log/apt/term.log ?

Also add any .rej file and make.log in /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-96/96.43.14/build/ ?

I am using the AMD 10.04 64-bit release and I am having the same problem with the nvidia-96 driver...fails to install.

@Jpj 808: there are many reasons why installation may fail. In your case it looks like a problem with the alternatives but the original report is about a build failure. It is not the same cause so could you please file a new report instead of commenting that one.
press ALT+F2 and enter:
ubuntu-bug nvidia-96
