Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
If the external, secondary LCD display is connected to the notebook, the boot process hangs while the ubuntu logo is displayed (with the 5 red dots beneath). It is neither possible then to switch to an ascii console.
Booting with the monitor cable unplugged succeeds.
Heavily coupled system! Consider also a general design flaw: one minor failure stops everything. Should always be possible to get the linux kernel booted and do a console login somehow, at least to gather diagnostic information (trace hanging process or alike).

This appears to be a plymouth bug. I'm marking this bug as a duplicate
of the original plymouth bug.
Another work around, other than to boot with only one monitor plugged
in, is to use SysRq+Alt+K to kill everything when it's hung at the end.
GDM should then come up correctly.
