Bug Description

Lucid does not detect HUAWEI 3G dongle only the USB storage on dongle.

I am going to boot with 9.10 UNR to make sure dongle works and is not some hardware issue.

noticed it was logged same as my previous issue, obviously this is related to kernel and network devices.

Test with 9.10 UNR Live and dongle is detected and can connect to 3G network.
Installed 9.10 UNR as well and I am doing an update to see if it still works after update.

After updating 9.10 UNR to latest from repo the USB dongle was not visible. I checked the security and noticed that wireless and network devices where disabled for my user by default. I enabled them and the dongle is working again.

Going to boot lucid beta from USB to see if security settings have anything to do with the problem.

After booting with 10.04 beta1 UNR Live USB I could access the 3G network using the dongle.
The problem must have been default permissions not allowing configuration of network devices etc.

I would question why the first user which is an administrator would not be allowed to configure wireless of network devices

I'd like to add my personal experience here, maybe it helps. I googled and found that seems to be necessary to setup usb-modeswitch for the stick to work.
However, When I plug in the stick now, syslog tells me that modeswitch claims to have switched the stick into modem mode, like:

Jun 11 17:37:55 rtfm kernel: [89219.604681] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22

Jun 11 17:38:03 rtfm kernel: [89227.522872] usb-storage: device found at 23

However, as you can see, directly after reconfiguring the device is beind reconnected and re-detected as mass storage and pops up the inevitable drive icon instead of being listet by network-manager.

If you need any more logs, please tell me so and I will glady provide any info you request.

In the mean time I found out that the stick is indeed properly configured as a modem. It attaches to ttyUSB0 and I can send commands and receive output quite nicely. Its just itching me pretty much that NM managed this stick so nicely on ubuntu jaunty and now it is not even listed by NM in lucid.

I'd really appreciate hints on what to do to make NM recognize that there actually is a modem waiting for commands!

I confirm that Network Manager (Lucid) CANNOT even detect Huawei E169 not to mention "work out of the box". But it truly works out of the box in Karmic (Jolicloud 1.0). Please do something to prevent Ubuntu from becoming like Fedora, where hardware detection and support gets WORSE from one version to another... thank you so much!

p/s. So how exactly should I make Lucid detect and enable the 3G device?

rykel, please do not assume that another distribution is the same as Ubuntu even if it may be based on it: they may well have done additional changes, applied additional patches, etc.

Looking at this quickly, it's the first time I see the actual model of dongle being mentioned in the bug report.

Could someone please follow the below steps to add modemmanager debug information to this bug report (as per comment 11 in the upstream bug report):

1) unplug the modem
2) stop NetworkManager (you can do this with "sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop". Don't forget to start it again once done, or reboot)
3) killall -TERM modem-manager
4) modem-manager --debug
5) plug the modem in

Then please attach the output of modem-manager to this bug report, along with the output of "dpkg -l network-manager modemmanager".

Thanks!
