Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-sound

Sometimes, but not always, the sound indicator starts up displaying as muted in the panel icon. However, the sound card is not actually muted, I can (and are currently) play and hear music just fine.

When I open the indicator menu, the volume level is correct. As soon as I change the slider, the icon in the panel changes to show the correct volume.

I have two sound cards, a builtin primary one, and an USB headset, might that make a difference?

I didn't see it in the last two days. Were there some recent changes which could have fixed this, or is it just pure luck? (We all know heisenbugs..) Thanks!

To be honest Martin nothing has changed. I have been watching for it closely. But have not seen it even once on 64bit or 32bit. Nobody else has seen it either...

Haven't seen it in a while now, so let's call this "magically fixed" for now. I'll reopen once I see it again. Thanks!

I just saw this in indicator-sound 0.4.3-0ubuntu1. I wish I could give you more info on how it happened.

Bernhard (b.a.koenig) wrote :

Actually just happened again:

1) I play around with the sound indicator, especially with "Sound preferences"
2) suddenly crash apport comes up but indicator is still there and now muted while music still plays
3) apport does not work: "The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes."
4) now I have the sound icon muted and music plays still
5) very interesting, now I have two volume sliders in my sound indicator: one on top and one below "Sound preferences"

I might be able to reproduce, let me know if you need any backtrace.

Actually, this happens to me constantly in maverick. Has this been reported somewhere else for 10.10?

Can you confirm that Pulse is running ?

This sounds like the service is crashing constantly. Have you updated, recently ?

I will check next time if Pulseaudio is running but I guess it must be because I still have sound when I see the muted icon.

I'm running latest maverick, updating every day.

Bernhard (b.a.koenig) wrote :

Just crashed again and pulseaudio is running normally. It must be sound-indicator, something places the slider at the bottom under "Sound Preferences" (not usually there) and then the sound-indicator icon is kind of superseded.

Hi Bernard,

Later on today I should release 0.4.5 which may fix these issues. Please retest once this is out and let me know how it behaves.
