Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image

I upgraded my ThinkPad X32 notebook to Lucid beta last weekend. The notebook does not have a floppy drive, but the floppy kernel module causes very high cpu iowait usage for about 20 minutes after reboot. At the same time, it keeps issuing error messages as follows:

[ 1123.553851] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[ 1136.618649] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Reproducible in 2.6.32-16-generic, 2.6.32-17-generic, 2.6.32-22-generic and the upstream kernel 2.6.34rc7.

Manually removing(rmmod) and loading(modprobe) the floppy module later cannot reproduce the problem.

Work-arounds:
1. blacklist the floppy kernel module.
2. disable Legacy Floppy Drive in ThinkPad BIOS.

Hi Wenzhuo,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 544954

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem in the final edition of 10.04 on a thinkpad t42 system.
Not sure about processor use, but it throws floppy IO errors (no floppy drive ever present).
The system is *very* unstable. I've been using past Ubuntus on this lap since 8.04 or so, and had no problems whatsoever. I'll try to post more info.

I have a similar problem. I haven't any floppy and I reinstalled from scratch the Amd64 version (I had the 32 bit version before) of Lucid and it seemed to work out until now. Suddendly, after a reboot, the system came to use 1,8 Gb of RAM where it used about 300 Mb before, and the CPU load rose from 0-1% to 15% when I'm not doing anything. In fstab there was... a floppy!!. I don't have a clue, that's for sure, but if there's any data I can gather that can be of help, just tell me how and I'll do it. Thanks a lot for your hard work BTW folks!.

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
