Bug Description

Binary package hint: spamassassin

The SpamAssassin (spamassassin, spamc) version packaged with Dapper is now 10 months old (and 4 releases out of date), and as a result (due to the ever changing and fast moving world of Unsolicited Bulk Email transmission), is now of extremely limited use in real world spam filtering.

I have posted a workaround explaining how Dapper users can update SpamAssassin to a more recent version using CPAN:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1313996

However, this should not be necessary with a newly released distribution such as Dapper. In fact, if SpamAssassin is to be packaged at all, one could argue that it is an application which should be continually updated via ongoing updates, as for the application to remain useful in ever changing Internet conditions that is necessary.

The old, outdated version 3.1.0 is even packaged currently for Edgy:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/mail/spamassassin

The currently packaged version (Dapper, Edgy) should be updated to 3.1.4 immediately, and kept updated on an ongoing basis.

Edgy is now up to 3.1.3, which is the most recent version that is packaged for Debian.

I have backported this myself, and it's absolutely trivial; perhaps you might like to raise a bug for dapper-backports, to get 3.1.3 included. In the meantime, try http://ubuntu.hs.net.nz/dists/dapper/firewall/.
