Could you please post a screenshot of the issue? Which icon theme are you using?

I've never changed "icon theme". Can you help me determine which one is used on my box?

I get the same symptoms. I've tried switching themes, switching icon theme, and I've tried using gnome-shell. In all cases, if typing break is enabled, it appears in the notification area as the "broken" icon.

do you get the issue in a guest session? do you get a such issues with other icons? do you have any error in .xsession-errors?

1. No, during guest session the icon for gnome-type-monitor looks fine. Also, everything looks very different with black window decorations and such. Switching my main session to Ambience theme didn't help.

2. No, I have yet to face such a problem with any other icon.

3. .xsession-errors has a lot of messages. Most of them are not relevant but these may be:

(gnome-panel:1790): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_theme_lookup_icon: assertion `GTK_IS_ICON_THEME (icon_theme)' failed
sys:1: GtkWarning: gtk_container_foreach: assertion `GTK_IS_CONTAINER (container)' failed

1) There's no ~/.gtkrc if this is what you mean.

It turned out this has everything to do with indicator applet vs. notification area duality in Lucid. So the way to see the bug is:

1) Remove indicator applet from gnome-panel
2) Add notification area to gnome-panel (only if it's not already there)

gnome-typing-monitor shows the correct icon in indicator and fails to in notification area. This should be trivial to fix because everything worked ok in Karmic.

affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) → indicator-application (Ubuntu)

Yes, I can confirm that it works in indicator applet, and if I remove the indicator-application package, the icon is shown as a broken image.
