Bug Description

Binary package hint: plymouth

This report was initiated as an automated process around the time I was running the hardware test suite.

I am not aware of having asked for a shutdown, and when I shutdown a few hours ago (immediately after upgrading from alpha-3 to the beta current as of 3/20/10), shutdown appeared to be normal. I even saw the new color scheme at shutdown.

On the other hand, this Fujitsu Lifebook has a history of not shutting down properly. I first installed Ubuntu at 7.10 on this machine, and shutdown was normal. I upgraded to 8.04 LTS and stayed there until last week. Under 8.04 the system has >NEVER< shutdown normally.

I am looking forward to midnight tonight, to see what does or does not happen to happen :)

In response to a request to shutdown it >appears< to shutdown, going completely cold and still. But unless I remove the battery or press and hold the power button for approx 20 seconds (during which time the fan and LEDs come on, then go off) it will reboot at midnight. I tried and failed to find a BIOS setting for automatically turning on at a known time. This behavior has never appeared under Windows XP - in fact, until I learned the trick of holding the power button down, I routinely used my dual-boot capability to shutdown from XP to ensure the system would not wake up and drain my battery dry (again...) in my backpack.

On a possibly related note - the only reason I allowed XP to continue living on my harddrive is that from time to time (ALWAYS after a full battery drain) my touchpad becomes non-responsive. The only certain cure I am aware of is to reboot from Windows.
Dunno why.
