Bug Description

I have installed 10.04 beta from DVD, activated nvidia-current, and rebooted. I logged in, set a black background image, and did a system upgrade. There was a dependency problem with update-notifier-common, so it was just a partial upgrade. On the next reboot I could login, but I got just a moving mouse pointer. All the gnome stuff is gone.

See attached .xsession-errors.

I've got a similar problem this morning, I was running Lucid alpha-3 and did an upgrade using the gnome menus, after reboot I was left with an X-window and a mouse, no metacity window manager. Rebooting my system in maintenance and doing a manual upgrade didn't help. After several attempts I did CTR-ALT+F1 at the X-window, logged in and did:

          sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The above installed a lot of software, after installation I rebooted my system and everything was working fine again!

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
