Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help make ubuntu better. Can you please delete all you accounts and quit empathy and then try to install the development release of empathy from the telepathy ppa https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa and then try to connect. Doing this solves the network error situation for most people. Please let us know if the problem is still there.
