Binary package hint: usb-creator
Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 amd64
usb-creator-kde package version 0.2.12
Qt: 4.5.2
KDE: 4.3.5 (KDE 4.3.5)
USB Startup Disk Creator: 0.2.8
After successfully creating a USB startup disk, usb-creator-kde leaves it mounted.
mount reports:
/dev/sdb1 on /media/4540-2FD1 type vfat (rw,nosuid,
Maybe this is intentional, there's a comment in the source /usr/lib/
# XXX evand 2009-07-29: Leave mounted, so we don't rip the
# mountpoint out from under the user, if they've decided to use it.
But the average user *won't* be able to use the USB partition. In KDE at least the partition on the USB doesn't show up in the plasma panel's Device Notifier or in Dolphin as a plugged-in device. The user has to know to navigate to /media and click on this random name ("4540-2FD1"). Besides, if the user tries to use the USB drive, they'll most likely mess it up.
usb-creator should unmount the USB drive, and a better final UI would be, instead of the vanishing alert:
The installation of <name of .iso> onto the USB disk at <USB device name> is complete.
You may now reboot your computer with this disk inserted to try or install Ubuntu.
Otherwise remove the USB disk.
