Bug Description
An improper native type (minus one) is returned when the CA client library interacts with servers using protocol revisions prior to 4.2 (probably EPICS R3.11).
Looking at the code it appears that other problems related to maintaining the proper connection state exist when the client library interacts with revisions prior to 4.2.
Additional information:
Currently the LANSCE gateway is probably the only CA server in the world frozen at protocol revision 4.2.
