Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce4-panel

To reproduce try to set up an xfce4 panel in kiosk mode as documented by:
http://www.xfce.org/documentation/docs-4.2/xfce4-panel.html#panel-kiosk

The upstream bugzilla thread is here:
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1993

In the bugzilla thread it states that it should be fixed in "SVN revision 22442, or in the next beta release". Should this patch be backported to the current Xubuntu xfce, as it is a documented feature? If it is not backported will the next beta be in Dapper? This is also a potential security hole because following the documentation gives you the false assumption of a locked down xfce which is not currently provided.

it's not a security hole since one is supposed to test a kiosk setup before deploying it ;) Still it is an annoying bug for kiosk users.
Since it is not yet part of any release it's not in edgy, whether or when it will get in dapper is not yet known. There's another kiosk issue in dapper

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/47834

Probably they should get in via dapper-updates, but there's no xubuntu policy about what should or should not get in there.

Yeah, the security hole thing was a long shot :-P. But I would really love for this to be patched in Dapper as I am deploying kiosks for as long as they last (which is why I would like it the Dapper LTS version). I sure would love to know that an 'apt-get upgrade' won't break my patched XFCE I'm going to have to install.

Actually the policy is that absolutely no features are updated/backported to past releases, only security fixes are backported. Xubuntu is not officially supported by Canonical so this kind of bug could not normally be escalated to be fixed during this release's support lifecycle.

Are you still using Dapper ? Can you confirm that this is still a problem ?

If you have upgraded from Dapper to Edgy, can you also report back if it's still a problem ?

Fabián Rodríguez: You're thinking of an SRU.

A backport *may* be possible. It is something we'll discuss at the next -devel meeting.

Thanks,
