Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

While entering my password in the "Enter your password to perform administrative tasks" dialog (when the entire desktop is dimmed), the keyboard layout indicator does not reflect keyboard shortcut-initiated (e.g. Alt-Shift) layout changes, thus it is impossible to know for sure which language I'm using to enter my password (shown as dots).

This behaviour is only observed with Compiz disabled.

I can not reproduce this, my indicator changes to reflect the layout change on entering administrative password (i. e. on Synaptic startup). Can you confirm the bug still exists on latest Lucid?

Evgeny,

I can still reproduce the issue with all latest updates applied (as of April 12, 10:30 UTC+4). When the desktop is dimmed, the keyboard indicator does not reflect current layout (e.g. it is "Rus" when Synaptic is started but I need to change it to "USA" to enter the proper password.) However, after I hit Enter and the desktop gets undimmed, the layout indicator instantly changes to the current layout.

A side effect of this issue is that it is impossible to switch the layout with a mouse click over the indicator in the notification area.

Got it!
Please confirm that you're not using composition. On my two systems, disabling Compiz allows to reproduce this bug, but with Compiz enabled this bug is not reproduceable.

Indeed, that isn't a gnome-settings-daemon bug, it has no control over what is drawn to the screen when the gksu dialog fades the screen

Evgeny,

Your diagnosis is correct. I have my Compiz disabled all the time.

Can you test Maverick to see if the issue is still present?

Sorry, I have no ability to install Maverick at the moment. Mayber, there is someone out there who has access to Maverick? The steps to reproduce the issue are fairly simple and determinate. The easiest option, it seems, is to have the Update Manager load the latest updates from the server to bring up the admin password prompt.
