Happened in Lucid-amd64 after today's kernel-update -> 2.6.32-16
Happens regularly after booting when x-server starts. Only low-graphics-mode posssible.
All was fine until today with kernel 2.6.32-15

Confirmed. Like the reporter I am also running 64-bit in a Virtualbox VM with the "low-graphics mode" issue, although this bug appears to be ALSA-related.
