Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

When opening a folder that contains some PDF files, nautilus generates both thumbnails of the files and a logfile (~/missfont.log). The latter could easily puzzle a lot of unexperienced users.

Thanks for your bug. That's evince which does the pdf thumbnailing, reassigning. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Does it happen with any .pdf? I've no such file on my edgy desktop

I grepped through the sources (of poppler and evince) and couldn't find anything of the sort. Can you please try to find out *where* that files comes from?

I use Dapper Drake (6.06 LTS), and the file in question contains some references to kpathsea and some of the Computer Modern fonts, although I haven't installed (La)TeX at all.

what about the "Does it happen with any .pdf?" question?

Unfortunately, right now I'm not at the Ubuntu-driven PC to investigate further. Will provide the needed info ASAP.

It turned out that *not* .pdf, but .dvi files cause the missfont.log file to appear in the user's home folder while (? evince-thumbnailer) was trying to create a thumbnail. In search for more example .dvi files I downloaded the AUCTeX manual[1] that also generates the mentioned .log file and (to my suprise) couldn't[2] be opened by evince.

This bug is perhaps a duplicate of Bug #42410.

The problem (missfont.log and problems opening .dvi files with evince) was solved after I installed tetex-base, tetex-bin, and tetex-extra (as suggested in the comments for Bug #42410).

However evince-thumbnailer still does not generate a thumbnail for .dvi files, but I can live with that:)

Just after posting the above statement, that evince-thumbnailer doesn't generate thumbnails for .dvi files, I noticed that such thumbnails are generated *indeed*!

Apologies for the misleading information.

That's likely due to one of the tools called by evince and not due to evince itself
