Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of GStreamer is available in both Lucid and Maverick and we are wondering if this is still reproducible in any of those versions, May you please test and give us of feedback about it? Thanks in advance.

Pedro, thank you for your interest in this problem. This issue is still present in Lucid with the following gstreamer packgage versions:

ii gstreamer0.10-alsa 0.10.28-1 GStreamer plugin for ALSA
ii gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.10-1 FFmpeg plugin for GStreamer
ii gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 0.10.12.debian-2 Fluendo mp3 decoder GStreamer plugin
ii gstreamer0.10-gnonlin 0.10.15-1 non-linear editing module for GStreamer
ii gstreamer0.10-nice 0.0.10-2build1 ICE library (GStreamer plugin)
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.18-1ubuntu1 GStreamer plugins from the "bad" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.28-1 GStreamer plugins from the "base" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-base-ap 0.10.28-1 GStreamer helper programs from the "base" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-good 0.10.21-1ubuntu3 GStreamer plugins from the "good" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly 0.10.14-1 GStreamer plugins from the "ugly" set
ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-mu 0.10.14-0ubuntu2 GStreamer plugins from the "ugly" set (Multiverse Variant)
ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio 0.10.21-1ubuntu3 GStreamer plugin for PulseAudio
ii gstreamer0.10-tools 0.10.28-1 Tools for use with GStreamer
ii gstreamer0.10-x 0.10.28-1 GStreamer plugins for X11 and Pango

The error message when trying to play MPEG streams with embedded teletext data (typically recordings from TV) has changed to:

** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|private/teletext decoder|decoder-private/teletext (private/teletext decoder)
** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|application/x-mpegts-private-section decoder|decoder-application/x-mpegts-private-section (application/x-mpegts-private-section decoder)

If the user is watching a live TV stream, failing to cancel within seconds of the dialog popping up can result in a stream with video and audio drop-outs, probably because video output is halted and some buffer is overflowing and gstreamer seems to fail to "skip ahead" to the current position of the stream when the plugin dialog is closed.

A dummy plugin would be very much appreciated.

I think its strange this bug has low prio because it means I cant use gstreamer to watch recorded TV-shows AT ALL, in my case recorded by mythbuntu. Of course there is the standard work around to use mplayer / vlc...

It also means I cant edit recorded files using Pitivi, default video tool in lucid.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

This problem is still present in debian squeeze with gstreamer 0.10

I think it is related to teletext, as audio and video play ok after cancelling.

I use vdr with vdr-live plugin, and this is quite annoying, I need to press Cancel button everytime I open a TV channel, as video stops playing (you get a paused frame) until you Cancel or try to download the plugin with package manager unsuccessfully.

I think a good solution would be to change the code in gstreamer plugin to ignore this (teletext?) data.
