r2876 broke middle-click for new tab

The patch committed in trunk/2876 as a workaround for bug 375077 causes a severe regression in our middle-click to open a new tab function. While a new tab is still opened when middle-clicking on an empty part of the tab bar, it also causes the side panel to toggle, which is unacceptable.

If we can't fix this problem, we need to revert r2876 and re-open bug 375077.

If we could find out why double click does not really work (see the FIXME in that commit), we could make it work this way.
Otherwise we’d really have no choice but to revert and reopen. Then again #375077 would most likely become WONTFIX since I cannot see us finding a better fix in the future.
