I have already tried linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and the PPA from Ubuntu Audio Development Team with no luck.

Ah, ok. I have been playing with alsamixer a lot and maybe I left that control muted.

But after unmute the master control I still have no sound.

So unmute Surround and Center, too.

No, I remember that Surround and Center have been always muted even when the sound was working.

Anyway. I have unmuted both and still no sound.

Please use linux-alsa-driver-modules from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev

Also, make sure that you're using the correct default sink; see pactl stat

And, just to check, reverting to -19 results in working sound, correct?

No, I have rebooted with 2.6.31-19 and no sound.

But a few days ago I had sound (I suppose with -19) and I have not changed anything of the configuration since then.

I only have installed the alsa-backport modules and the PPA from Ubuntu Audio Development Team (with no luck).

Please remove all linux-backports-modules-alsa* and linux-alsa-driver-modules*, and verify that -19 has audible sound whereas -20 is not.

Alternately, dowload and boot a live cd of the most current daily-live Lucid desktop and reproduce this symptom.

I have desintalled linux-alsa-driver-modules for kernel -20 (no packet for kernel -19). Rebooted into -19 and no sound.

I have tried the Lucid daily build from Sunday 7. I listen sound without problem.

So now?

Because sound works from a live cd, I'm closing this bug. Please reproduce the symptom using a newly created user.

This is strange. The command beep makes sound. And with a new linux user there is the kde starting sound, but no any other sound.

Why there is sound with the beep command and some kde sounds but no while playing mp3 o watching .avi??
