Bug Description

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid Alpha 3 earlier on today and have just properly rebooted since the upgrade and noticed that the boot splash appears when it shuts down but not when it boots up (the aubergine dots thing)!

I'm sorry I cannot provide you with more information at this moment, maybe within the next few days I will do, although I don't doubt other people have/will probably experience(d) this problem or similar!

I do have a NVIDIA graphics card, that probably has a lot to do with it, in fact it might not even be related to Ubuntu at all in that case...

I've had a similar problem so far in Lucid, but it's an on and off type of situation. Sometimes the splash screen will appear and sometimes it won't. More than likely it's something with Plymouth.

The workaround I've just found here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9234768 is to run next two commands:
echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
sudo update-initramfs -u

This fixes problem for me,
