Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

This is the first time I have tried to file a bug so please excuse me, when installing via .deb packages for the first time on Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3 I noticed a dependency request by apt for "Ubuntu-desktop" despite being a small download shouldn't this be included in the standard Ubuntu distro?

Sorry If I seem Picky just trying to help out. :-)

Indeed the default install should include ubuntu-desktop. Did you remove any packages that might have uninstalled ubuntu-desktop by accident?

It was a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3, I was installing a deb package from a website and i noticed this on dependency list. I exited and tried another deb package (again from an external website) and the same dependency was reported again.

As far as I know nothing was don prior to this to remove it, it is worth noting that only the "ubuntu-desktop" package was missing the rest of it was still in ubuntu. Although a small file, i thought I'd better report it with the next distro being an LTS.

Did you manually install ubuntu-desktop afterward, or is it still missing from the system? The package itself does not have any functionality, but it has a lot of dependencies for your desktop related tasks.

I manually installed the "ubuntu-desktop" deb package from the official repos, I guess if this had have been done via teminal apt-get command i probably would not have noticed it. Everything related to it is running fine now.

Maybe the logs in /var/log/dpkg.log.* contain a trace of what went wrong.

Please use latest stable release of Ubuntu Lucid and check if this behaviour is still affecting you. Also if you are able to do a fresh install of your system would be great because a developer release is always changing packages.
