I can confirm this happens too, when I am trying to mount /dev/sda5 (which has /) on a live CD, exactly in Ubuntu 10.04.

Is the disk broken ? That was my question. There's a Win7 install working just fine at the beginning of the disk, and a fresh install of 10.04 at the end of it, which has functionned correctly twice, and now crashes at boot time for unknown reasons.
The Palimpest crach occurs at various times when checking the various ext4 filesystems of this Ubuntu part of the disk from a live USB session.

Disk driver issue ?

Happened to me when using Disk Utility (while running a CD version of Ubuntu) to check and if necessary correct file errors on the disk which contains both Windows and Ubuntu in separate bootable partitions. The Ubuntu partition no longer boots past login, hence the need to test the disc.
