Bug Description

I did a fresh install of karmic which then i went straight away to upgrading to lucid so there should be no extra packages installed onto the system apart from the basic packages which come on the karmic/lucid CD. When i rebooted after the upgrade had completed I was met by the gdm screen which in the top right told me that there was a issue with GNOME's configuration. I attempted to login but every time when supplying the correct password after about a minute of waiting at a black screen it returned me to gdm.

I also had a similar experience with lucid... and this issue may already be resolved.

When you get to the graphical login. Press and hold keys Ctrl & Alt and press F2. This will give you a non-graphical login. Login with your username and password. Then type: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Once finished reboot by typing: sudo reboot

After reboot attempt login again from the graphical login.

There is no support on such deprecated version; that one has died long time ago.
