Support for VDPAU and VA-API is currently targeted for Gstreamer 1.2, which is scheduled for release in December 2012. See http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/wiki/ReleasePlanning/RoadMap

Could be a nice Christmas present.

OK, so experimental VDPAU support was actually added in GStreamer Bad Plug-ins 0.10.14, supporting MPEG2, MPEG4 and H.264. It was improved a lot in Gstreamer 1.2. Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy Salamander" currently has gst-plugins-bad1.0 version 1.2.0-3ubuntu5 and Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" currently has gst-plugins-bad1.0 version 1.2.3-1ubuntu2. VDPAU support will be further improved in Gstreamer 1.4 which is due out in March or April this year - see https://fosdem.org/2014/schedule/event/whats_cooking_gstreamer/attachments/slides/458/export/events/attachments/whats_cooking_gstreamer/slides/458/gstreamer_fosdem_2014.pdf
