Bug Description

Binary package hint: irqbalance

Fresh install of Lucid Alpha 3.
Then did apt-get update, upgrade and got the following errors (from /var/log/apt/term.log):

Preparing to replace irqbalance 0.55+20091017-3ubuntu1 (using .../irqbalance_0.55+20091017-3ubuntu2_amd64.deb) ...
stop: Unknown instance:
Unpacking replacement irqbalance ...
[snip]
Setting up irqbalance (0.55+20091017-3ubuntu2) ...
^Cdpkg: error processing irqbalance (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)

Then, after rebooting, an "installation error" pop-up was available under a red exclamation mark icon in the panel area,
which I used to generate this bug report.

Could you check wether irqbalance was running before the upgrade?

How many cpus do you have on your system?

Could you paste the output of /proc/cpuinfo

I don't know if irqbalance was running before the upgrade, although I didn't do anything to stop it. It's running afterwards

The machine has 2 CPUs. It's a virtual machine guest configured with 2 CPUs, which I believe actually do run concurrently (the host is a quad-core i7 with hyperthreading). The VM runs under VirtualBox 3.1.4.

I'll attach /proc/cpuinfo from the guest running Lucid.

I tried un-installing and re-installing irqbalance (apt-get remove irqbalance; apt-get install irqbalance).

The problem did not recur. So it indeed may be a race condition, or possibly related to being the first update after a clean install.
