Bug Description

Binary package hint: transmission

After downloading, and then removing files and deleting them, then closing Transmission...the icon remains in the notification area. Transmission will not restart and force quit does not get rid of the icon in the notification area. For all purposes Transmission cannot be used unless a restart is performed. On restart Transmission runs normally until quite a few downloads, then the problem re-appears. This has happened on more than ten occasions. I have changed the directory to user/ documents/working folders/transmission...this should not affect it?

See attached screenshot for file path's. I noticed this happens more frequently after min/maximizing window for transmission. Using close button and re-opening window..program still running.

Hi rseascaoe,

I don't think I'm understanding this ticket correctly. When you say "then closing Transmission" do you mean using the File > Quit button? Does Transmission's main window disappears while the tray icon stays in the tray?

Also, "Force quit" should kill the application outright. You're saying that an unresponsive version of Transmission stays floating out there somewhere, only showing itself in the system tray?

On quit, transmission main window appears to close, but Icon is still
visible as if it was minimized, but the program cannot be re-opened.

You mean on clicking X button it minimizes to tray? If option stay in tray is on it should be in tray also when not clicked X when still open.
Whats the default on ubuntu when clicked X? it minimizes to tray or asks do u want to exit? What the default i need answer from someone who has clean installation or at least deleted ~/.config/transmission
im on xubuntu.
on xubuntu default on X is asking for closing and i dont like it.

Clicking the x button minimizes to Avant navigator tray (installed AWN),
after several minimizations, then finally right clicking icon and choosing
"quit"...the Icon remains, the program will not re-open, the program cannot
be restarted. This is re-produce-able. My installation and configuration is
clean. This has been present since the installation of 9.10 x64, Ubuntu
Karmic Koala. Again, the default when the 'X" button is clicked is to
Minimize with no dialogue.

See attached configuration files and .jpg. I have removed and deleted files
several times...maybe the config files will help you.

I am having this problem also...

When I open the System Monitor...
Transmission is taking up 100%, status is Zombie, Memory is N/A, and Waiting channel is do_exit.
I have tried all of the options on right click and none of them do anything.

I had this problem, or at least a similar problem, too.

I left Transmission running over the weekend to seed. When I tried quitting it this morning, it said to hold on while it was uploading stats to the tracker. After a couple of hours I noticed it hadn't finished, so I closed the window. After a bit I got the dialog saying it wasn't going quietly; I told it to go ahead and kill the app.

That still didn't do anything, and ps still showed it consuming 100% of the CPU. I repeatedly tried killing it, both normally and -9. The process still appeared to be running, and my load was high (over 5). Looking further I saw that the CPU-eating process had a parent, so I tried to kill -9 both of those. It didn't work, but shortly after that the machine locked up and I had to reboot.

I thought it might be just my machine, but Google suggests a number of people report similar symptoms, so it seems like there's some unhappy interaction between Transmission and the kernel.

I'm using a reasonably fresh Ubuntu box that is otherwise unproblematic. Software versions:

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Linux bluegum 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
transmission-common 1.93-0ubuntu0.10.04.1

In the 2.04 case, this sounds like upstream ticket https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/3493 which is fixed in 2.1x... could you please give 2.1x a try via https://edge.launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/+archive/ppa and see if the problem persists?

Thanks

There are quite a few people on this ticket, but unfortunately not many clues to go on.

Is this still happening for anyone using Transmission 2.1x, as asked back in comment 14?
