Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

I use Kubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a generic desktop computer with Intel Core2 Duo and nVidia graphic card (with the proprietary nVidia driver). I use all the last official available karmic updates (27.02.2010):

Linux generic PAE 2.6.31-19.56
nVidia 185.18.36-0ubuntu9
xserver-xorg 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
KDE 4:4.3.5-0ubuntu~karmic1

When I boot the login screen of KDM appears very shortly, doesn't wait for user name or password and skips directly to the next step. The progress dialog for KDE appears and hangs at the first step (the stylized HDD). Important: I don't (and I never did) use the auto login feature of KDE! I use the Oxygen-Air theme (standard in karmic) as login theme.

Workaround: I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, login in tty1 and type: sudo killall kdm.
After being terminated, kdm automatically restarts and shows the login screen. There I can normally enter my password and login to KDE (without hanging in the progess dialog). It works but it is very annoying.

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

Same here, step to reproduce:

1 - enable CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to kill X
2 - login into KDE and press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE
3 - go to console mode
4 - reboot
5 - KDM hangs as described above

Step to cure:

1 - when KDM hangs, press CTRL+ALT+1 (go to console tty1)
2 - login as root
3 - apt-get install --reinstall --purge kdm

There must be something stale in kdm rc files.

By any chance did you install plymouth? If yes, you may encounter problems. Refer

If no, you may want to try out new nvidia driver 'nouveau'.

No, I use the USplash boot screen (standard in Kubuntu 9.10).

Does this remove the bug once for all or just for a few next logins?

@Goh: no, I did'nt install plymouth

@Stèphane: I don't know, but my guess is no. My procedure simply reset KDM configuration to the default, this let me point my finger to KDM rc files, there is probably something wrong when you don't do a clean exit from KDE that messes up the config files.
BTW I did not experience the problem again after the "cure"

Of course this is just an hypothesis.

I would exclude that the graphic card is involved: I have an Intel G45 on a Dell latitude 4300.

Is this still an issue with Kubuntu 10.04?

At least it never happened again on my computer since I updated to Kubuntu 10.04.
I would say this not an issue anymore on Kubuntu 10.04.

        Dear 496406,

Even if your sex life is already rich and fulfilling... Imagine you had a little more energy... if your erections stayed harder... or you could go just a little longer...
Or maybe you worry, when you climb under the covers, that you’re starting something you can’t finish?
Well, now advancements in natural medicine are making it easier than ever to promote a strong libido, firm, natural erections and enhanced desire.

Now thanks to this exciting natural breakthrough, you could get an erection “on demand” and when you do, sustain it long enough – and keep firm enough — to fully satisfy your wife in bed. Even if you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or older!

As a doctor, I’ve learned something over the years that may surprise you — age has very little to do with sex. There are men out there having the best sex of their lives well into their 80th year and beyond.

And those men have three key things in common that their sex starved friends don’t:
Hard, recurring erections...
Heightened desire and stamina...
And a reproductive system that could be functioning at the top of its game...

   Lucky? You bet.

But you too could give your body the nutrients it needs to support your entire sexual health.

Antibiotics play an important role in modern medicine fighting infections caused by bacteria.
