This bug appears to have been reported under #492271.
I upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty. Upgrade was smooth, but immediately after restart Karmic froze after login in about a minute. Serach on forum yielded following workarounds which helped to restore normalcy, but with visual effects = None.
(1) Change /etc/xdg/
(2) Before Karmic could freeze, in the 30 seconds that one gets after boot, change System-
Both changes seem to be needed to keep desktop working without visual effects.

Thank you for informing us about this bug in Karmic. At this point in time only security fixes are backported to Karmic. If you have the posibility to test Lucid, it would be great if you could test if the problem is still present there. If it is, please file a bug report from there with `ubuntu-bug xserver- xorg-video- intel`. I'm closing this bug, since we cannot do anything with it in its present form and I think it is easier for all parties if you file a new bug report from Lucid if the problem is present there rather than updating this bug report.
