Thanks for taking time to report this bug and make ubuntu better. The problem you are reporting in my opinion is not a but. Empathy/Telepathy at the moment does not support file transfer and desktop sharing for that matter. Only if the other user is using Empathy/Pidgin you can send files. So I am marking this invalid. for further info see this page http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/wiki/Protocols%20Support

that's retarded then. why switch to empathy at all? it's useless....

so empathy is really incapable. I don't get it, why include a messaging client that clearly is inferior to pidgin in almost every way except for the "neat" telepathy "inclusion" in gnome, which could've also been accomplished with a pidgin plugin? i'm annoyed

Sebastian. Your comments are appreciated, and you have every right to feel the way that you do. There IMO will always be the debate that pidgin is better than empathy and vice versa, and theres nothing wrong with that as the idea spawned from a lot of those debates make their way into both programs. Thankfully pidgin will still be available to download in future Ubuntu releases, and you are welcome to use that instead.

If you really want the in-scoop on a lot of these issues then you can go to #empathy in gimpnet IRC or #telepathy in freenode IRC.

In the case of this bug report, there are soo many protocols that there are to make a file transfer for, and its a completely new framework, that it will take time to get them all. I welcome you to check out http://bugzilla.gnome.org and search empathy bugs, as well as http;//bugs.freedesktop.org to check out telepathy-* bugs to participate actively upstream.

If you want I can turn this into a wishlist bug, requesting the feature. But please don't expect much action once that happens, as I dont' know when this will get more attention.

you might want to consider being respectful and reading the code of conduct on http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct, you are dealing with mostly volunteers who do work for free there, calling other people or they work "retarded", "useless" and "incapable" is not a way to open a constructive dialog with anybody or to be listened. empathy has a schedule aligned on GNOME and Ubuntu, gets lot of bug fixes in every update, has video chat working on jabber and msn out of the box and better integration in the desktop too (allow sharing your desktop over vnc with your contacts in one click for example). You are free to use pidgin if you want though there is no reason to insult other people this way

I will not leave empathy because he does not send the file to the MSN protocol, I use a function almost never ... There are other ways to send files: mail / online storage

For compatibility with empathy it's mark "Work in progress"
