System tray has multiple blank icons

Bug Description
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
My system tray has increased significantly in size during the past few days. This could also be related to the sound control icon not showing up. I tried moving around the system tray applet just in case this was a positioning issue -- it does not seem to be. The applet is moving around with all the empty space in it.
