Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

RELEASE: Lucid Lynx
CD/DVD VARIANT: Xubuntu desktop i386
ISO BUILD: 2010-02-24.1

SYMPTOMS:
After hitting <ENTER> on the desktop cd menu "Try Xubuntu without installing", my monitor shuts off. After waiting 7 minutes it turns back on. After a few more minutes, I have a scrambled/blank screen. Then hit <ENTER> to get the GDM login screen, where I can hit <ENTER> on 'login', enter my username, ubuntu, hit <ENTER> on password. Then the desktop will appear.

CAUSE:
Possible conflict with Plymouth and NVidia video

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

   1. Burn the desktop image to a cd-r
   2. Start the computer with the desktop cd
   3. Select "Try without installing"
   4. Observe the monitor power light changed from green to yellow, which indicates no signal from the computer.
   5. Wait 7-8 minutes for the power light on the monitor to turn green again.
   6. Wait for the screen to appear in a dark backlit screen
   7. Hit <ENTER>
   8. Wait for the login prompt
   9. Hit <ENTER> to login
 10. Enter "ubuntu" as the username
 11. Hit <ENTER> as the password
 12. Wait some more for the desktop to appear.
 13. Total time from menu to desktop, approximately 15 minutes

I can reproduce this every time I start the desktop cd, with or without using the live environment. Logs were created booting with debug=

Please do not set the priority on your own bugs.

This sounds like a nouveau or xorg bug. It's definitely not a ubiquity bug as ubiquity doesn't start in the "Try Xubuntu without installing" option until *after* you've gotten to the desktop and clicked on it. Moving to xorg.

This should be fixed in the Beta 1 CDs. Could you please check with these, or a more recent daily, to verify that this problem has been resolved?

This problem has not been fixed as of lucid beta or the March 28 daily lucid
build (I just tested both with the same result as before). The issue seems
to affect users with LCD TV's (and possibly nvidia video cards) but the bug
disapears when one plugs in their computer to an LCD monitor.

Considering that many people have LCD TV's (and nvidia video cards) and that
those users OS's are incapacitated by the bug, should the bug be marked as
critical under the bug level definitions?

See Bug #545648 for more info.
If there is any way I can help please let me know because Ubuntu Lucid does
not work at all on my system because of this bug. Thanks - Adam
