Bug Description

While using any software using audio input (i.e. skype), I experience random lockups of the audio input; the only way to make the audio input working again is :
killall -9 pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload

Moreover, my dmesg is flooded with

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in pulseaudio.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Also, can you please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments?

If you are using Jaunty or later this information can be gathered for you automatically using the command 'apport-collect -p alsa-base 527709'

Looks like a hardware/driver problem, have you tried
1) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats#Sound%20drivers%20need%20to%20be%20updated
or
2) a fresh Lucid live-CD?

Hello,
adding:
options snd_hda_intel model=laptop
options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N position_fix=1 enable=yes
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf , the problem seems to be solved.

Hi gianfilippo,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 527709

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I would like to add that i faced a similar problem with VLC using --input-slave alsa:// .

While dmesg shows no errors , i was getting stuttering audio while recording.
Only workaround i found was to launch vlc using the padsp launcher script and using --input-slave oss://
Once i switched to oss emulated input vlc recording was perfect.

Using 10.04 lucid with vlc 1.1.2 .
