I thought that the following might be useful in resolving this issue:
-the original bug report came from an attempt to install Mint with the KDE GUI.
-after filing the report, I attempted to install Mint with the Gnome front-end and it quit at the same place.
-I then attempted to install Kubuntu 9.10 and got the same thing.
-the machine config:
MSI P4MAM2-v2 (MS-7095 v1) Motherboard
Intel P4 Celeron 2.4ghz
2 GB RAM
Chipsets: VIA P4M266A & VT8237
ATI 9200 AGP Video
I am installing to the 3rd partition (ext3) on the first IDE drive, the 2nd partition is a 5gb SWAP. The first partition contains a WindowsXP SP3 system using Win7 BSD boot.
I previously ran Ubuntu 9.04 with this same setup.
Cheers, P.
