Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala directly from livecd but it doesnt work. When I tried to login appeared a black screen and after a few seconds it returns back to the login screen.

Now I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and then Kubuntu by Synaptic. The problem seems to be the same, but only with KDE, Gnome works perfect.

Xorg.0.log shows a few errors, but are the same in both cases (KDE, GNOME).

Syslog shows,

Then I've tried to login in recovery mode, and run kdm from console. The kdm login screen appear, but the problem still the same. In this case syslog is slightly different

At last i've tried to run plasma-desktop while i was in a gnome session. This also works, and the KDE desktop appears over ubuntu.

I don't know where is the problem. Thank you for your help.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in kubuntu-desktop.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

The problem is just when i try to login a kde session. It's only a black screen that lasts a second and then i'm again at the login screen. I dont know how to print a screenshot before login in. i can take a photo with my camera, but i believe it wouldnt be helpful.

I am having a somewhat similar experience in Lucid. This is on a laptop with non-standard and not fully known hardware, 7 years old and sold in South Africa under a name I couldn't find elsewhere (euroTeK).

What happens is that kde installs, but login fails in exactly the same way as described here. I have tested the following: installed kubuntu: login screen appears fine, type username and password, icons start appearing, just when you think that login has completed, BANG, back at the login screen.

I have also installed kde from Lucid itself. So the login screen in gnome, but I set the session to kde. When I try to login, the kubuntu screen (blue, with dots) appears, and then the icons and then it fails (as far as I can tell, in the same place as under kubuntu proper).

I have been having a similar problem in Kubuntu 9.10 since the late April updates. Another problem occurred at the same time and somewhat obscured this, but I have now resolved that, leaving the kdm bug. It seems to be due to kdm judging from the logs, .Xsession-errors in particular. However the kde people say that it must be a distribution bug, so I suspect this may be a great merry-go-round. I cannot tell if kdm uses pam for authentication or not, so it is possible that the problem lies there.

Same problem here. I make accidently a interessant discover. My girlfriend can connect without any problem on her account. So maybe a problem with a booting program, but I cannot detect wich one. startx on kde is ok.

Sounds like what I'm finding. I have just done a completely fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04, to dual-boot, on a spare partition in my VectorLinux box. On first, and every subsequent boot of Lucid I am unable to do a grapical login. Initially I though it was a login fault but on switching to tty02 I found I could login smotthly. On later attempts at a graphical login I noticed that the screen momentarily filled with rubbish before returning to the graphical login prompt.

The installation was done from the 'kubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso' image.

From tty02 I examined the logs and noticed that syslog gained the following every time I tried.
"Aug 23 18:49:58 DeanMachine kdm_greet[1946]: Cannot load /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory".
A look in the given 'kdm' directory showed:-it contained nothing but the following directories: 'patterns', 'pics', 'programs', 'sessions' and 'themes'. There is no 'faces' directory.

As this is a completely fresh installation onto freshly formatted partitions then I would guess that this might be a problems in the packages ?

I am, for the moment, not going to disturb the installation by trying to fix it. You will appreciate, though, that I am unable to use any of Kubuntus bug-handling tools. I can, however, use the VL installation to examine Lucids files.

Any further info I might give?
Cheers, Kimdino

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
